Lensbaby Composer.
Last week I bought myself a Lensbaby. I have never tried one myself before, but I sure like its effects.
I had a shoot this Saturday where I tested shooting with it. To be honest, I will need some practice with it!
Shooting with a tilf-shift before I thought was more steady, but not quite the same effect of course. And not in the same price league, at all.
The composer is easy to move around and to create different effects with, but sometimes I had hard times to get the effect not effecting the model’s face. But then again, I am sure I just need some more training with it.
I read that if you’re focusing first, having your model i focus before you tilt the lens it would be easier to create an effect from this. Of course you can choose yourself how you’d like to do, but I will try this next time shooting with it. Another thing with Composer is that you change the aperture in the lens, I went with the F/2.8 but will definitively try the other ones also.
When you like an effect you can lock this with the Composer, which will let you to keep the effect throughout your shoot. Before I was thinking of getting a Lensbaby Muse, but after testing composer I think this one will be better for me, because reading about the Muse I think I want to have a little more control over the image than Muse can give me. But, I really enjoy the effects the Muse create.
The Composer is a little more expensive than Muse and they look a little different to each other.

Questions! – long time ago so here is a couple….
Do you need an assistant?
– Yes! 🙂 Usually my friends help me during shoots
do you work as an assistant? do you think it is important to work as an assistant next to another photographer? do you get paid do help?
– Sometimes I do. It’s nice to work with another photographer to see how they set light and work on the set. If you’re really new to photography and want to learn more by assisting I think it’s OK to work for free, but otherwise you should get paid.
Some photographers also make fashion or artistic vidios of the shoot the do, it would be awesome if you did that too!
-^^ yeah. I tried and I have some clips that can make it into a video, but I am afraid I am not very good with such programs.. haha
Are you still attending ypu photography school?
-Nope! I graduated in June. 🙂
How long have you and Robet been together? You make such beautiful couple. Do you argue or have fights?
-Aww, that’s sweet said of you! We’ve been together for 1 year and 8 months. 🙂 yeah, of course we argue sometimes but we’ve never had any fights. He’s a wonderful person and we’re very similar in the way we think and act.
What advice would you have for someone trying to get into the fashion business? How do you go about finding models and clothing ect.
-First off you need to have a nice portfolio. Contacting agencies and photographing the new faces there are very nice, usually always for free also as everyone gets photos for their portfolios. Also contacting designers that is in the beginning of their career, ask if you could build a portfolio together. People love working together even if it’s for free becuase they get lovely images. Either way, the fashion industry is very hard. Believe me. You really need to work a lot before getting a foot in. But I think it is important to try new things, different models and such. Assist photographers also, to learn new things and to meet other people. Contacts are SO important in this business!
I’ve noticed that your pictures have earned the place as covers on books, well handful at least, did people contact you about them or how did your photo’s end up there? 🙂 my dream is to pursue editorial photography for that reason.
-I am part of Trigger Image, which is more or less a stock imagery. I’ve gotten half of my book covers sold here. The other ones people have personally written to me to buy those images. 🙂
How do you contact with model agencies?
-I email them, sending some of my photos and tell them who I am! 🙂 If I have any shoots going on I usually see if any new faces are available.
do u like amy winehouse ?
-Actually, never listened to her music. So can’t say if I like her music very much, neither if I liked Amy.
Hi! How do you ask magazines to publish your artwork and eitorials?
-Hi there!
Either they write personally to me or I write to them and attach a series of mine, then it’s up to them to decide wether to publish it or not. 🙂
Are you more of a talker or more of a listener?
-Listener. But kind of depending on what of subject we’re discussing.
You’ve probably been asked this before, but… how many minutes you spend on retouching your photos on average? 🙂
-Depends on what kind of photo it is! Photos I take for myself, probably 1-2 hours. For clients and shoots with models, 2-5 hours. Or longer if it’s close up. Depends a lot on how good the MUA was, how nice skin the model has and my own work during the shoot. ^^
More behind the scenes shots please? And I love that post of where you guys had a tea party 😀 too bad you weren’t in the photo 🙁
-hehe I will try to!! ^^ I am always the photographer haha XD that’s why… Sometimes people are afraid to use my camera XDDD

Some more questions for you:
Your best awesome surprising unexpected gift from someone you ever imagine before?
Hard question! It would probably be when people give me things I’ve wanted for a long time but haven’t told anyone – this sure shows they know me well. 🙂
Can you do a tutorial on how you post-process your stuff? :> Also I was wondering how do you save your originals and resized + retouched photos – do you rename them or something?
Not sure of a tutorial, but maybe I can show you guys some steps in the progress? I keep the RAW-file and then I saved the retouched photo (with the layers) in a PSD. Then I make a high res JPEG of that with the same name and another one with the same name but ending it with “web”, for publish on the net.
How do you decide which of your photos you will alter and publish? Also, where did you learn photo editing so well, especially when it comes to the skin and blemishes? I always have issues with both of those...
I try to choose photos that I like and think will fit my portfolio. So, I pick the ones that stand out the most and which I want to show to people. I started off photographing back in 2006 this is also when I started retouching. I’ve been working in Photoshop since then, but avanced in non-destructive techniques last year. It’s a combination between different techniques, but I can say that I work a lot with healing brush, curves and clone stamp. I do take commissions when it comes to retouching. 🙂
what’s the brand of your black lipstick?
It is called Star gazer, not very fond of it, but it was quite cheap. XD

Oh btw, Harriet will be spending the weekend with me and Robert! YAAY! :>

Haven’t posted any questions from my formspring for ages… so here we go!
which foundation do you use?
I use a matt foundation from Nivea called “Ideal finish mousse”. It is quite light which works OK with my skin.
you said before moving to stockholm tha you don’t really like it and you prefer gothenborg. do you like stockholm now?
I still do prefer Gothenburg, but living her for two months sure has made me enjoy Stockholm a little more. It’s mostly the expensive stuff here that I do not like xD
When you shoot on location (with another model, not self-portraits), do you use a tripod or do you mainly hold the camera? I know it’s kind of a weird question, but I’m just wondering how your photos are always so perfectly sharp and in focus, lol
I usually never use a tripod when shooting with a model. I only use it when the light is poor :>
I just wanted to let you know that you are a huge inspiration to me <3 And not only are your photos amazing, but you are seriously one of the most beautiful women I’ve seen. 🙂
aww, that’s very kind of you, your words sure put a smile on my face! 🙂
thanks a lot!!
Where do you work to pay for rent and camera equipment? Or do you solely sell and do photography commissions to make money?
Well, I am still studying so I get study grant to pay our rent. (Robert and I share it). I’ve paid my equipment with money I’ve saved and from various photo commissions. 🙂

Hmm, probably my belts. 🙂
If you could go back in time 10 years and tell your younger self something, what would it be?
Believe in yourself and don’t give a damn about what others say you can and can’t do.
🙂
Who’s the most overrated musician?
Lady Gaga. uh!
What website do you spend the most time on?
…

Some questions:
which kinds of metal music do you like?
Well, I’ll link to my last.fm so you can see rather than me telling 🙂
http://www.lastfm.se/user/Bloddroppe
What program do you use to retouch?
Photoshop CS4
Ever thought of giving out your own tips and tricks with your blogs? Some artists are secretive, but I wondered how you felt about that 🙂
Hmm, I am not sure I have so much to give out any ways! But for the things I have learnt on my own I sure want to keep for myself because my photography is based on these. 🙂
do you remove moles when you retouch or it depends?
Some I remove, others I keep. I want to keep it realistic and I love keeping personal features! 🙂
Your bf is Japanese or descending? He looks like!
Haha no, he’s half latvian though!
what kind of game console do you have? what’s your favorite games?
Basically, all the Nintendo ones, from NES all the way to Wii. But also XBOX 360, Sega and playstation. Anyhow, my favourite game is Zelda (Oot and twilight princess). But I have a love for left 4 dead 2 and gears of war (2). Hm, I have lots more favourite games I think… though. I also adore Dragon Age origins to my computer. 😀 I have games that I love on every console, but it not my absolute favourites though!
are you straight edge?
Yes.
You said you’d like to take photos of Johnny Depp. How about a female model? Who would you choose? ^^
Even harder question! Hm, I think Dita von teese looks lovely. But Keira Knightley is also nice, she fits in those fancy dresses…. So I guess Dita or Kiera. 🙂

Hm, I don’t have anything to post or write today. So I give you some questions instead:
What do you recomend to take an good self portrait with self timer? I mean ISO, EF, lens, light… Your selfs are amazing!
Kind of depends on what you’re after. I use a 50 mm 1.4 and love working with it for self portraits, but only when it comes to tripod. Otherwise it’s hard to take portraits with a 50mm. I usually take mine in front of a big windows, after noun with big aperture. 🙂
what’s the dye you use for your hair?
schwarzkopf brilliance intense red 🙂
what kind of make up do you use?
Many different ones! But without any labels, I love eye-liners. ^^
¨
how large is your apartment?
Not big, we live two in a apartment made for one person ^^
Do you do the makeup for your models? And if so, about how long does it take? Btw, I love the way you do your eyeliner 🙂
Sometimes, but other time it is a make up artist and sometimes the model her/himself. If I do it, maybe 30 minutes, but longer if a make up artist let their magic begin!
How tall are you?
About 5 feet 8 inches, I think. or 172 cm^^
is your bf wearing a re:vision camera lens cuff?how much did it cost?
Yeah, he bought one for me also :3.
It’s kind of a bracelet. Didn’t cost so much, 10 $, the one who sells them are Adam Elmakias.
how did you feel when you died them from black to red?
Well, I’ve had black for some years so it felt nice with some change. it was quite a procedure though, never bleached my hair this much before. But I really come to like it, but nowadays I just re-colour than bleach before I colour it red again.

A few of you have asked me questions about my extension tube so I decided to upload an image of it.
It’s a Canon extension tube EF25 II. It has no internal lenses and is usually used for macro photography. You put it between your camera and your lens.
Here I use it on my 50 mm 1.4 for images like these:
Mostly flowers and smaller things like jewellery.

More questions:
where did you bought your wig from?
Actually from fanplusfriend. But last time I looked it was gone :/
what are you wearing on your left arm?
oh, they’re from music festivals I’ve been to this year. Metaltown, west coast riot and mosh pit open. 🙂
when you take self portraits do you use a reflector? if so, how?
When I take self portraits I rarely use a reflector actually..
love the light in your photos!i’m wondering if is natural or not? and if it is natural at what time of day you can find the best light for bright portrait? thanks jos…you are great!
Thank you!
Well, the photos that are taken outdoors are all natural, with some help from a reflector. Hm, normally I take photos from between two to four. Kind of depends on the weather, I prefer cloudy days. But the light in the morning, before twelve (twelve is worst in the sun..) is really nice!
wow! I just show your last photos! Amazing! Is that a personal shoot? Or a paid one? The model is absolutely perfect and so are your skills!
Very glad to hear that, thank you!
Actually, it’s a school assignment. We should take photos for a client and I asked Niki if she wanted to have a shoot. 🙂
so you just showed us another school assignment! why are your school assignments always soooo cool? great job Josefine.
Yes. ^^
haha well, they’re are what you make them to be. Sometimes they’re hard, because you don’t have an idea, but other times it’s the other way around.
